I've been looking for some 'low hanging fruit' to practice my SEO skills. I found a good looking KW - 4000 searches / month, 0.50c CPC and the competition looks very low. Google returns 300,000 results and the top page includes facebook pages and obscure forum posts.

Then I noticed there are a whole bunch (about 10) of similar KW's with similar metrics and equally as lame google competition.

So my question is, should I buy a load of domains and do a separate site for each keyword, or should I create one site to try and cover them all?

One issue is that there are other KW's in this category which I would have no chance of ranking for. So if I was to try and create an authority site, I would have a lot of competition despite these KW's not being picked up.

A real life comparison would be something like this. I have found 10 obscure fish that people search for but nobody has ranked for. So I could rank for these KW's, but there wouldn't be much point in me going a general fish site because I'd have to compete with cod, goldfish, salmon etc. Or WOULD it be better to do this and concentrate on the obscure fish?

Just one other thing - in these KW's are also a few which are being searched for a couple of hundred times a month but have a CPC of around $10. I know it's probably subjective, but just wondering if people would go for that or you're better off with high traffic, lower CPC?

Definatly only build the one site, target a set of keywords for each article you write. Dont register a stupid long domain, soley for SEO. Try to make it something concise and easy to write. Avoid hypenated domains, they suck....just my 2 cents.

Even if you think that you have no chance of ranking for those higher keywords, build your site around the niche anyways and include them. Over time you will see that you can gain ranking with proper SEO tactics and tweaking. Hitting those easy long tail phrases first, as you noticed is the best option. I myself have done this on a few sites, and within a month was ranking 20+ keywords in top 10.

Over time you should build more and more content targeting new keywords. With backlinking you can give your site the needed bump up too.
