if you are starting out, try hostgator. Once it starts to get big, i recommend liquidweb. They are really good in customer support. :)

Also you guys doing those one click install should really rethink that practice. When you do those easy installs everything is set at the default which from a security point of view makes your site vulnerable. Wordpress by default is not really all that secure, it does not take a lot to secure it a bit during the install and you are better off doing so.

I totally agree with this. Until you've had a site hacked, it is hard to care about security. The first time your site gets hacked up, you'll always take extra precautions, use stronger passwords, etc.

Also, site speed is really important for your main/money site. I don't like GoDaddy hosting because it always seems to be slower than Hostgator, Bluehost, or Hostmonster. If you are just building a blog network/link wheel, then the cheap hosting is great for creating linking c-block diversity.
 
I agree with jibjabber and volund. For me the best and safest combo is Namecheap + Hostgator. They provide the best support and prices are quite reasonable.
 
What about off-site blogs with their own domain for stuff like tier 1 backlinks? Would something like the $1/month hosting be ok for that sort of stuff where you're not really concerned about the ability to handle traffic, but more about there just being a site to hold the backlinks?

Multiple $1 accounts would actually be ideal since it would give you linking IP diversity. Just be sure not to sign up too closely together or your IPs won't be different enough. IPs have 4 blocks: aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd -> Most hosting from the same company will have the same A/B blocks. By having a different C block, your site will look like it is owned by a different person which is better for SEO. You'll have better link variety. Make sense?

Dont go for cheap hosts buddy, go for hostgator baby plan or hatchling plan if your hosting 1 site only.
