I am looking for a free wordpress theme that is easy to edit and doesn't have features locked behind a paywall. I will use it for a magazine style blog which will have display ads, and lots of images. Suggestions?

colormag is free, then you can upgrade to pro version, like most wordpress themes & plugins, there is a free version which you can upgrade to.

very good theme.

& it has display ads - there are literally loads of wordpress themes that can do this,
