Benefits of Linux

So, I posted this under the "tools" section for a reason.

I was wondering if using Linux had any advantages in the BlackHat world.
Is it considered a "tool" in itself?

I know it's better for coding, and many other things, but what about SEO, and BlackHat methods?

Linux has no benefits except that 'maybe' it's a little bit faster .... though stacked up one right to the other, you can compile something just as fast in windows as you can in linux. But to me linux "feels" faster in many ways.

Also, you have ''security through obscurity". Since most viruses and crap are made for windows, you'll at least be partially protected in linux. Not really, but every little bit helps right?

As for is Linux a "tool"? Well, it's like a pick-axe or a hammer. It's how you use it. If you're a command line freak, then linux is where you should be.

It doesn't really have any benefits though. Since ALL your BH work should be done in Virtual Machines anyway.

SEO and BH methods have absolutely nothing to do with linux. For most software you'll need Windows anyway, so you'll have it one way or another.

If you want to get your hands dirty a bit and learn about computers, then Linux is where you want to be. Other than personal gain, it posses no BH method gain.

You can do several things:

* Dual boot. Linux on one HD and Windows on the other
* Single boot with Linux, and keep all VM's there.
* a mix of the above.

For me: Windows, Linux or Mac ... hell even BSD are all the same. I prefer Linux as I'm a command line junkie. Though, as this moment I have 4 Windows 7 x64 virtual machines running on this computer, along with an apache server for code testing and design. I have a on-site *nix server for main storage and some archiving, *nix host for main websites (gotta love SSH access which Windows servers don't really like, and a Win virtual host floating around for ... hmm, 'things'.

Linux is just an environment.

It's like asking, which is better for getting to my 9-5 POS job in? A Hummer 1 or a Skyline GTR? Both will get you there ... it's just the style you choose to arrive in.

Server side.. UNIX is the only way! people using windows server boxes are losing out. Linux is ok for server side but if you really want to fly and know what you are doing freebsd all the way!

For me linux is essential to seo. I wouldn't be where I am without it. While you can compile code on windows it just isn't as easy to interact with other programmes with winblows.

I'll put an example out there. OK so you decide you want to get some profile links for your website via forums, great you can use xrumer... but what about if you want to do something that xrumer doesn't do. Something that you've figured out would be really good for seo but it just isn't possible with xrumer. It's not open source so you can't modify the code... Most people would be stuck.

In linux you can write a forum signup script in twenty minutes. I code in ruby and a simple phpbb2 forum sign up http.post script is about 20 lines of code. But then you run into a problem. Most forums have captchas. In windows you would be stuck. In linux there is programme called gocr which is a god send. An hour later you have an amazing captcha breaker. Perhaps an hour and half as you have to use a prog called imagemagick to clean up the captcha first. So in a couple of hours you have a script that you can bend and manipulate at will that can do all the stuff that xrumer can do and more.

It is programmes like imagemagick and gocr that make it so easy to programme with linux. For problem solving there is nothing better. It is the ultimate tool for seo in my opinion. It was almost built for it. That coupled with the fact you can use it as dev studio just by starting up apache.

Almost all programmes for linux are free and open source so you can read through a programme you are using and see how it works.

I really can't recommend it enough. I kinda feel like a salesman pushing a free product but if you are a competent computer user linux will take you to the next level.

I am running Ubuntu only now, and am liking it very much.
Big learning curve, but it seems to do everything I want to do BETTER than Windows.

I am learning slowly, but like what I see so far.

So, if I wanted to write a script to add users to FB, would that be possible?

It would take a long time for me since I don't know much about coding, but could a friend adder be created effectively?
