Beginners guide to keyword research?

Hi,
I've got several websites that I've tried to SEO or got others to SEO for me in the past and had some ok results, got to page 2 of Google for a few keywords I was trying to rank for.
but my main problem is, I never really know what words I should be aiming to attract traffic from - I normally just guess, using common sense based on whatever the site I am trying to promote is selling.
But I'd like to try a more scientific approach - find the right keywords that the people who want the products/services on my sites are using to try and find them.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a beginner's guide to researching the best keywords to use? Or is anyone willing to talk me through the process on Skype/ Hangouts or whatever - I can pay if someone is willing to spend a bit of time going through it with me.

Hello Dear,

keyword is the most important part of the search marketing field. They can make or break the website.

There are some steps which will help you guiding about the keyword research.
1) Make a list of topics about your business.
2) Fill in them with keywords.
3) Research related search terms.
4) Check for head terms and long tail keywords.
5) Look at the competitors ranking to those keywords.
6) Use Google adwords keyword planner.

And you are done now.

You have to be knowledgeable when it comes to using Google Keyword Planner. But first, you have to create a list of the topics covered by your chosen niche. Search for tutorials on how GKP works. It's the best tool that can help you come up with a list of the best keywords that you can use for your articles.

tonmoy, I'm adding you right now too. I'd love to get my skills updated - haven't done kw research for a time now.
 
Keyword Research is basically composed of 2 parts:

-Keyword Discovery, when you come up with a list of keywords related to your niche that have search volume. You can use Google Keyword Planner for this.
-Keyword Competition Analysis - where you analyze whether you can actually rank for those keywords or not, is there serious competition or not. This is usually done by analyzing the top ten results for a particular search, the rationale behind it being that if top 10 results are easy to beat, then you can rank in top and beat all the other competing sites as well. There are specific tools that analyze the top ten seo competition for you, the one in my signature being one of them if you want to give it a try.
 
Just a random question though, is Moz's Keyword tool helpful? I'm a SEO newbie and been using this for quite sometime now... :confused:
