Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice on a side hustle I can start as a beginner with almost no budget.

A bit about me:

  • I have some tech background and used to do a bit of coding, but I got pretty burned out from it and don’t really want to go back to heavy programming right now.
  • I’m not starting with money to invest, so ideally something I can start for free or very cheap.
  • I tried looking into freelancing, but honestly it feels like a lot of time wasting, bidding, and competing, and it’s been hard for me to actually land jobs.
What I’m looking for:

  • A simple skill or online hustle I can learn and start fairly quickly
  • Something that doesn’t require much upfront money
  • Doesn’t rely heavily on freelancing platforms
  • Even if it pays small amounts at first, that’s fine — I just want something realistic that can grow
If you were starting from zero today, with no budget and basic tech knowledge, what would you learn or try first?

Any ideas, methods, or personal experiences would really help. Thanks!

My opinion:

1. Learn/study about SEO stuffs (there are many tuts here or yt just search it)
2. Since you have a techy side, try to help pips here or on reddit about programming or build a tool (e.g: reddit automation, soc med automation etc…)
4. Go to Joint Ventures here, and find some pips there to make a collaboration.

You could try starting with something that leverages your tech background but stays light — like building simple tools, automating small tasks, or creating digital content (guides, templates, or micro-assets) you can sell. Focus on learning one thing at a time, keep it low-cost, and scale gradually. Consistency beats chasing quick wins, so pick a path that feels doable and stick with it.

the key when you have no budget is to sell your existing skills as a service first, then use that income to fund whatever passive project you actually want to build. trying to go straight to passive income with zero capital is where most beginners get stuck.

Teach people the barebones basic of Claude Code or Codex.

No like, really barebones. Forget going live with anything.

What are files
Why are we saving all the files in the project's memory
Frontend vs Backend
Running the slop AI gave the client/student/local law firm
API and why it matters
Prompting AI
How to use the terminal

A lot of people right now are seeing these crazy buzz words and achievements, with no idea how to begin to replicate the process.

You can code and can explain things clearer to an AI when trying to build something. Make content where people already are, X and YouTube.

Use Reddit for long term authority - slowly attach direct links to your content as great, must absorb content to learn from regarding the keyword they searched. Is it not?

I didn't know so I asked Claude the above - notice how without mentioning Reddit it only searches for that? Apparently, the number one search is "process.env undefined" followed by
.env file not working
accidentally pushed .env to Github
.env not in .gitignore
.dotenv not loading
env file syntax / what is .env

On X and YouTube just give value, help people, provide solutions. Plumbers and Barbers are searching "Difference between codex and claude when building a SaaS" - this is your audience.

Keep your main socials clean, apply what you can from here, once you start getting real and loyal traffic coming in pivot to light monetization.

You can't really change the outcome of what happens from this point, try different shit. Affiliates, courses, go all in on ad rev whatever your audience will tell you what they want to spend money on.

I suggest Roblox game and asset creation. It runs on C# which is fairly easy to learn (since you come from a technical background) and you will need to learn blender as well (it's a 3d model creation and editing tool). You can buy cheap udemy courses when they have discounts (this happens approximately 1 time per month) and you can also learn C# from w3schools easily. So yeah there you have it a low cost method to make money.
