It all really depends on the keyword and on site SEO.

Yeah, just because a site has a PR5 doesn't mean it's optimized for the keyword and it's possible to beat it. Keep in mind, the PR5 doesn't necessarily mean it has a PR5 just that it had one the last time they updated the toolbar and yours may be higher than you think it is too.

I don't know what tool bars you have on your browser, but you need to:

    1. Use Firefox
    2. Go to seobook, join "free" and get the seo tool bar for Firefox and install it.

Once installed, you go to the PR5 page that you want to rank against and use the "seo xray" button. It's the BIG RED X with the 3 radar circles next to it.

When you push that "seo xray" button, a new tab (or page) will open up and you will be looking at all the keywords assigned to "that page".

You can then see what you are up against when you try to rank against it. Focus on getting your keywords either the same or more than your competitor's page (remember though that keyword density plays only a small part in ranking)

Your last task will be to get heavy back links to your site from good page ranked blogs, forums and directories. Combine that with what you have already done and I think you might just find you will be able to rank against the PR5 site.

You have a lot of work ahead of you...good luck! :)

If your domian has the keyword in it and they don't then it won't be hard.

I don't think PR has got anything to do with your SERP. Just build backlinks with keyword as anchor text and you should be able to beat them. Check where they're getting their backlinks from and what anchor text they are using.

Press releases and directories don't amount to shit anymore on any decent keywords.

BTW, just for all the people contributing their sparkling gems of digitalpointesque ignorance: blog commenting is a way to build backlinks, but blog comments in and of themselves don't get you further up the SERPs.
PR has everything do with SERP, because PR is a mesure of the quality (relevance, authority etc) and quantity of your backlinks. Saying that PR has nothing to do with SERPs is like saying GDP has nothing to do with a country's economy.

As mentioned already by someone who does know what they're talking about: the PR in your toolbar (and in all the checkers) is the external PR, out of date, inaccurate. Google updates your internal PR every time it notices a change in one of the elements that factor in its PR calculation (backlinks are the most well known factor, there are others). Google pushes out their internal PR every 3 months or so (the infamous PR updates) but it has no effect on the SERPs because they've already been using their up to date internal PR.

I'm going to admit that this made me smile.

For example, you're probably not going to beat WebMD in SERPS for it's page with the keyword 'Penis enlargement.' It's definitely possible, but if you're asking that question, you probably won't.

Your best bet is to target longtail keywords featuring that keyword and build 30-50 backlinks each day targetting thsoe longtail keywords.

Oh, and just to confirm, PR doesn't mean one site gets ranked over another in SERPs for a keyword. It just means that the page with the most PR has the most 'authority' from other people talking about it [linking to it]. It generally gives Google a predisposition to rank one site over another (I would illustrate with the keyword 'female penis enlargement', but I don't even want to Google that. I'm just saying that WebMD's first page, while a PR5, is not going ot come up for that term as readily).
