How many back links does it take to beat a EMD? The competitor i'm looking at has 767 back links and only about 15 has the keyword in the anchor i'm looking to beat them on. Should I go for 1,000 PR4+ back links with Manual commenting so it stays?

    Diversity, diversity, diversity.

Throw some well organized pyramids at your site containing an array of web 2.0s, blog comments, blog posts, articles, directories, social networks etc...

I believe EMD has very little role to play in SEO still I know there is a myth surrounding keyword rich URL vs Unique URL .Still As I say if you can mix proper Keywords research with quality link building in your daily SEO work then I am sure you would be able to beat and EMD.
I personally worked for some sites where I was quite successful in beating an EMD but as I said quality link building,I would like to stress more on that only.Avoid excessive use of bots if you want to reach your goal.

I agree completely, i worked on a site which had a domain that is not even a word but just for random letters. After about a year, that domain shows up when you type in the targeted keyword. When you in for the long run than building a brand is more important than any keyword rich domain, if you are in for the fast crash and burn than it might give you a short little advantage...

Well, the advantage is fairly big - all things equal - the EMD or EKD will always win, so if you have a choice to buy EMD for a $300-$400, even if it's a .org - I think it's worth it as you would have to spend it anyway on increased SEO.

    My opinion anyway...

From what I see in the serps, the EMD advantage has been toned way down over the last few weeks. EMDs were almost unbeatable for a while there unless you had an aged authority domain but that no longer seems to be the case.

EMD has very little role in SEO, if any - I agree with you. BUT, it has a huge role when it comes to CPC when we speak about Adsense earnings.

Once you have the EMD, your CPC will be much higher compared to the situation when you have just a general domain name, or simply any other name that does not match the keyword exactly. That's it... So, speaking about your client who I guess is not an internet marketer, do not worry about the emd at all. Simply do your daily job, and soon you'll be on the spot number 1. Good luck!

I'm confident that with a 4 x PR 5 backlinks you would easily beat him / her. The cost for 4 x PR 5 for 3 months won't be higher than $150-$200 so its worth a try.

If you can't afford that then I recommend article submission on top article directories with spinned articles

Ive optimized hudreds of sites and I can say with certainty that EMD's give a site an advantage in ranking for the keyword in their domain.

As dowser said, all things being equal - EMD wins.

Sure, they are beatable. Especially with an older domain and a solid backlinking strategy. But I've ranked too many EMDs for solid keywords with a less than half-assed effort to believe the EMD bonus is a myth.

I half way agree with statement as I am having a Car site not obviously taking the name and it is being running with adsence and truly speaking I am making over $5k pm and its not an EMD.

    That isn't related at all.

Nobody said that you can't make money if you dont have the EMD, but in case in your niche (the site making you 5k$ pm) you had the EMD you would rank higher, or if you are right now on #1 then If someone else comes along with the exact match domain (which I suppose will be at least a couple years old) it will affect you directly (I mean your ranking position)

Well seo'd EMD's are beatable but i would look at contextual links over comments. Comments are pants.

Yes you can surely beat an EMD with just 767 backlinks.

I think you should go for it.

Here's an idea to entertain you, model their link building strategy only when you build your links build twice as many...
