Negative SEO is not that impactful and trivial to do anymore. Low profile people that live on others' ruination have been left behind.

Depends on the point of view. I think SEO nowadays is not for lazy people, it may be a bit slower/harder to rank, but there is less competition, imo.
I'm just answering this from a SEO perspective btw, i think for the user it did not improve that much as they advertise... the algorithm is still pretty bad, lol.
(Still better than other search engines though).

I AGREE, current results in SERP are not providing the best results to our query.
We have to belive Google updates are made for giving the best possible results in SERP. After implementing the AI in the rankbrain update google came up with the best possible SEO changing factor which is called BERT. But I am sure there will be many versions of BERT updates like panda and penguin. After those updates, you will be on the top if you keep on working on SEO.
SEO is not for lazy persons. Before we might rank with simple technics. Because there were lot of loopholes. But those kind technics will not work more. Every update making worst for those kind of sites only. The best sites are still ranking better. You need proper content on your site you have to get relevant niche authority backlinks.
