You raise very valid points. I use a certain newsgroup, $10/month, and newsl33cher, (plus a free private torrent community) and I get pretty much whatever I want in the way of music, movies, games, tv shows, software....you get the point. I see both sides. As a writer and musician, sure, I'm losing out on revenue....on the other hand, if somebody downloads my latest record for free and falls in love with it, you don't think they'll be yammering it all up to everyone of their friends? Personally, while I know and believe in the business of art....I believe more in the fact that art should be enjoyed by everybody. It's not like Kanye or Lady Gaga (or whoever) is hurting for money because you're downloading their shit for free. Also, in a way, its free word of mouth advertising (which we all know is the BEST kind of advertising). I also pay for my service every month, as far as I'm concerned if the newsgroup isn't kicking anything back to the industries, that's on them. I hope they are, but I know they aren't. Another point....I've downloaded many movies, shows, music and software (especially software!) that were just dreadful. I'm glad I was able to try them out (full versions, no demo b.s.) before dropping 10's or 100's of dollars on them. Will I buy a product that is kick ass that I scraped? Sometimes. You also have to remember, for the most part, by the time a movie, song, game or software gets cracked....the artist/dev has already made theirs....and will continue too....in some ways, it behooves them to get reach into a market they price themselves out of...even if for free, because of the word of mouth advertising/testimonials.
