Revenue share affiliate program on the surface seems to be a lucrative potential deal and a win-win proposal for both owner as well as publisher. Owner do not need to pay a big upfront advertising fee and publisher can earn a lifetime revenue.
The hidden details is the killer. Today I received the below email. As you can see, so call lifetime deal is no longer a valid assumption. After x years of no new sales, you will get ZERO commission for your past referrals as a publisher. Owner can change these terms anytime and shift the terms in their favor.
The irony is this, usually revenue product takes time (across customer lifetime spend) before you can recover your initial investment as a publisher. Thus my suggestion to you when working with revenue share products, make sure you are able to cover your cost with the first 1-2 payments by customers. Don't assume profit will be lifetime when doing revenue projection (to decide if scaling a campaign is profitable). If in doubt, always opt for CPA if this option is available. Stay away from revenue share.
