[Basic] How To Modify Themes w/o Design Knowledge or Paying a Developer

Themes are great, but it's rare that a theme will look perfect out of the box. In my personal experience, I've found that themes usually require a bunch of small tweaks to make them look right for your purposes.

Most themes have customization options, but the customization options will usually not be enough to make your website look 100% perfect. Then you have two options: modify the code yourself (sometimes very difficult to navigate if you are not a developer), or pay someone to make the small tweaks. Though paying someone to make small tweaks isn't a huge investment, your small changes may still add up to costing more than the theme did.

Here's how to tweak a theme to perfection yourself without paying (and relying on) a developer:

1. Download all of the relevant theme files. For example, if this is a Shopify theme, download all of the .liquid files.
2. Open them all in Notepad++.
3. Use the Find in Files feature to search for the string you wish to modify. You can search for static text you want to change, or a color like #f0ff00, or a CSS element like .menu-small.
4. Notepad++ will dump out all mentions of the string you searched for in your entire theme. 99% of the time, you can easily pinpoint the string you searched for, and make the appropriate changes in the appropriate file.

Basic advice, but may end up saving you a couple hundred dollars a year and a bunch of time waiting around for your developer if your websites require any modifications beyond the basics.
