Banning from google?

I heard some black hat methods can get you banned from google. If this is true, why dont people use their competitors urls, spam the shit with them and get them banned?

Sorry if this seems like a dumb idea as I don't understand how it works, but wouldn't this make yourself number #1?

i think that spamming the shit out of it like millions of links in a very short period..will do that! but we talk about millions here!...so..i guess the best method is to spam 1000's on my site...and outrank them!

Yes it is possible, but if you ranked say 50th or something it would take too long to do it successfully.

Also if the webmaster contacts google and says I didn't do that it was a competitor or whatever they can include them back in the index.
