I keep seeing guys that are banned for a period of time and others who are permanently banned. What gets them banned?

Numerous things. Taunting other members, starting shit for no reason, posting useless threads or two word responses to inflate their post count. Really though, it's mainly scamming and the Mods business only unless posted in a shit list thread.

Asking questions they didn't want to know the answer to...

Bottom line, the mods are this board are very fair, and don't just ban members for nothing. I can assure you that if a member gets a ban of any kind, 100% of the time, they have broken the board rules.

It would be useful to have a ban reason next to the banned user's avatar, or at least in his profile somewhere.

It may not lower the weekly ban count, nor prevent them anyhow, but even though the ban reasons make sense, they're not obvious to all. Not only that, but it also makes the rules function more efficiently.

I think most of the time they are for selling stuff outside of BST.

I have noticed lately that when a person is banned it says "banned-see signature" under their profile pic. Sometimes but not always there sig has been edited with how long the ban is for. Can't remember if a reason for the ban was given.

This must be new but I haven't seen an announcement from the mods about it.

I was about to write the same , when you see signature , many times nothing is there.
Also knowing reason would help others from not getting banned.

BHW members don't get banned for reasonable mistakes - unless they absolutely refuse to learn when they are repeatedly warned to stop. Members are banned for flagrant abuse of the rules (ie massive spam) or for repeated less flagrant breaking of the rules. In the case of non-flagrant, the member is either warned or receives an infraction. That should tell them that moving forward they should read the rules more carefully and abide by them. If they continue to ignore the rules, they will find that they are banned.

We're not looking for a reason to ban members but at the same time, we're not going to let people abuse it either.

Sometimes I am shocked at some of the members that get banned. They are old members that have plenty of thanks and reputation. It lets me know to be very wary of people on thsi forum ;)

The last guy I remember seeing banned and wondered why in the world, is extremephp.
Search turns nothing, not a post, a thread, nothing that might indicate the ban decision.

It's not utterly important, but somewhat it is, because he used to be a reputable, respectable member for a very long time, and BH is not the only branch I have in common with that guy.

I may be wrong, but I think it had something to do with him stopping responding to BHW member's about bot he was selling here which had problems.
