Banned User - Sticky!

People come, people go on the forumm all the time. However the question is always asked 'Why did XXXXXXXXX Get Banned?'

You know what it is like, you have been keeping an eye on a thread for reviews and shit. Eventually you decide to take the plunge and buy the product/service/ebook etc only to find that the guy has just been banned!

So I would like to suggest that a 'Sticky' is created that MODs can post reason for Bans or it could be something we could see in the users Public Profile.

Why? We all know that we meet alot of the same users on other boards, so knowledge could save us pain in the future. Also the ban might be totaly unrelated to the product or service, therefore would allow us to consider to continue with a purchase or not as the case maybe.

In addition, it will also act as a bit of a 'Name and Shame' effect, abit like the Romans sticking your head on a spike!!

I would like to add that it should be a closed Thread! Not a open discussion, just a List of people that are banned, with the reason that only the MOD can edit. This is not to be like the Shit List where people have an open discussion. Think of it more like a Court Notice Board that publishes results.

I would say yes as my curiosity always gets the better of me but the bottom line of the matter is that they were all banned for breaking the forum rules.

This is not about curiosity, it is about the individual. For example 'Lifefzr' got banned today. I was going to purchase his DIGG service. Now it would be good to know what the ban was for. If it was because he scammed people on the service then I know not to buy. However if it was unrelated then I can more confidently go ahead and purchase the service.

Also when there was the thing with SEODeveloping being banned for selling CS scripts he did not own, there was still people that used his sig link to purchase the script. If they could have had somewhere to check reason for ban, then they would not have bought it!!

I think it would be a posative addition to the community. I know it will cause a few extra clicks and lines of text from the MODs, but the return on community support against scammers and rule breakers will be much greater and more benificial to the community in the long run.

I think it's a bad idea because it would create too much work for mods.

How many people get banned a day? Not sure that it would take to much work... maybe an extra 2 mins to update a thread! or if they go with the 'Reason for ban in Public Profile' that would involve a small bit of scripting, then when the ban button is clicked, a little pop-up 'Reason for Ban' and hay presto done, visable to all users, good karma for the community

We give Donations, we pay fee's for listings....... running a forum is work and looking after your members is the most important part.

I guess its the nature of the beast, we all deal in a certain grey area on the internet, which unfortunately means you deal with some oddities, so i think we should know, as this would be helping a fellow bh from falling into a scam later down the line...

I wouldnt want to here the ins and out of why, when, how... Just some txt added to there name once they have been banned, i.e. (scammer)...

Perhaps something like a few predefined reasons such as:

- selling something not owned by seller
- rule #X violation
- scammer
- spammer

...and so on.

This would make it easy for mods and keep the curiosity of forum members at peace.

Yup.... Not asking for the fine detail (unless they feel it warrants it), just something simple and informative.

Why don't you just make a few more clicks and a type a couple of lines of text and PM a mod to find out why someone was banned? :d

But seriously, that list would be HUGE and a bitch to edit. We like to keep our ban reasons private, for the most part. If we ever decided to make the info publicly available, we'd just put the reason as their user title. IE: BANNED FOR BEING A FUCKTARD.

And as for donations and fees and what not, BHW moderator/admin does not pay a salary...

I didn't realize that being a fucktard was a bannable offense... could you make that an official rule...

Also, sometimes we just temp-ban users for minor stuff. It's just too much work to manage a ban list for all these guys, and spend time adding/removing these guys froma list or undoing user titles for every temp ban. We have more important stuff to do.

The best thing to do is just PM a mod if you want to find out why. If we feel we can (safely) share this info, then we will.

maybe somebody can code a fucktardo meter to display under pple's avatar, then, when the meter gets to like say 80%...i dunno, the guy's computer crashes and the guy gets banned. Maybe we can get some guy dressed in a dark coat and shades to come knocking on the guy's house to give him a big swift kick in the a$$

Would that not cause even more work for staff? ie having to respond to 10 - 20 or even more PMs asking why someone is Banned?

I am suprised that you dont think a couple of hours coding to show a Reason for Ban in the Public profile is worth it?

I receive maybe 1-2 PMs asking about a banned user over the period of one month or so, if that.

I myself dont code, and I can't speak for HaRRo, but I doubt he'd want to spend time on it. But hey, if you code it up for us, we may implement it.

For the record, we don't always want to show the ban reason for every user who's banned. This is explained in the rules.

Don't get me wrong, we appreciate the suggestion, but this just isn't high on the priority list right now.
