Bad Domain Name Question

Hi guys,

I bought a domain name the other day without checking it's history (my bad, I've been out of the game for a while). I bought it legitimately in my name from my host provider. It turns out the name has been attached to some shady sites in the past (Chinese porn and spam). I haven't done anything with the domain apart from purchase it. My question is: will the bad SEO (for want of better word) associated with it have any detrimental effects on any new websites I build with different domain names, but bought with the same details, credit card etc? Or am I overthinking things?

Oh for sure, it's in the bin as far as I'm concerned. I just don't want to waste months building something that may fail because the domain was purchased with the same card, personal details etc. Nameservers haven't been pointed or anything. I just bought it and stupidly checked it's history after.

You've got privacy with it?

Let it sit and expire in 12 months or use it on different hosting as a test site.

No mate. I didn't get privacy. it's no biggie loosing it, I just dont want it tarnishing anything else I do.

Next time throw it into Ahrefs, see what comes up and check any anchors shown there.
Then WayBackMachine too, for a second look.

Cheers man :) It was the Wayback Machine that showed me it was dirty. I'm OK though using a new domain name bought with the same details? I only bought the dirty domain, didn't do anything with it.
 
If you hand registered it recently, you can ask for a refund within the grace period by contacting registrar support team

Thanks man. I'm not overly bothered about a refund. I just don't want to be tarred with the same brush as whoever used the domain for whatever reasons in the past.

Chill, you're overthinking this hard.

Check if the domain is actually penalized by search engines (and whatever platforms you may plan to promote the site on). If it isn't, you can use it.

The internet has been around for a while now, there are successful sites with domains used for low quality sites in the past.

Thanks man. I can overthink things for sure, but one should be cautious at the same time. You don't want to spend a year plus on a project and have it fail because of something that could have been overlooked at the start. Great advice though, cheers.
 
Search Engine analyze current web site activity and content. If you are not going to do something against their rules I think there is nothing to be afraid of.
