God. The saying that 90% of your problems come from just 10% of your clients is certainly true for me. Some clients are just awful. Hilariously, they are often the ones that are paying you the least! If I could cut the fat and just cut off those clients, life would be a dream.

Have you had any awful clients?

Everybody has a mix of clients, and they're certainly not always easy to deal with. I think the key is to have a customer support rep who is extremely patient.

It can also be good to have a separate person doing customer support from the person who's providing the service because you tend to get more frustrated and take it personally when it's your own work that someone is complaining about...

Everybody has some awful customers. Try to avoid them. Be happy with 90%, those 10% are never going to pay you properly and will always be complaining.

I just got through dealing with one of these. I offered to do something as a personal favor that was not included in the contract. Just because I am a nice guy.

So I didn't get to it right away, and the dude calls me up at like 5:00am and starts yelling at me to hurry up and do it. I re-sent him the original agreement and told him to fuck off. And then sent him a bill for wasting my time and general douchebaggery.

Clients are of different types and sometimes I do get clients of the type you are talking about. I try my best to deal with them tactfully and if they are getting beyond the limits, I finish the contract at once.

I have had a few clients, I guess the only thing is deal them with patience. Cause, you need them more than they need you ;)

I wouldn't say I haven't lost my cool, but try and hold it as much as you can.

Yea you always get a few clients like that -- just consider them as a challenge:)

Gah! I've been stuck in this rut a number of times where because I did the odd favour for a client, they always expect you to over deliver or do the odd little thing for free and steering the working relationship out of that and back to how it should be is such a challenge.

Its a tough one though, given the current financial situation and the track record of many UK based SEO's, I find I generally need to offer more which can automatically put you on the back foot by default.

yeah thats true

the one who pays less is the most awful one mostly

I usually refund them in a hurry and tell them to never come back...

what services do you offer?

Which ones are in highest demand for least amount of effort?

Thx

I agree.
The awful customer is the type who sent you tons of email or phone calls, making tons of question, asking for ridicoulus guarantees, and it happens even that he ask you if you are a scammer.
Never, never lead him on. Just dont answer after the 4-5 email/phone call.

Honestly get new clients. That sounds easy and makes me sound like a douche. But in the long run I would rather spend my time getting clients who let me do my job then try to please clients who want everything for pennies.

clients have been my main problem since i started my business, they drive me absolutely insane sometimes. but i keep refining my system and try to weed out the bad clients before i even start their project. i have a pretty good radar to detect these types of clients. if i notice he is going to be a problem then the price keeps going up until he shuts up. id rather lose a bad client than keep him anyways to lower my stress level

Something I learned in business is to be a good listener. This can turn pissed off or annoying clients into friendly people. Most clients just want you to listen and understand their point of view. If you get good at being a listener you can usually resolve most problems.

you should just make it clear upfront which type of support is included. charge for everything else.

Made my day :D
