I need to learn about backlinking..

my website owner Google tools seem to see only a few of the backlinks to a page..
Does backlinking help seo a lot ? Many people say it is the most important thing for google rankings ..

How about clicks get from facebook .. I mean what happens if I get more clicks than my competitor but I have 5 backlinks and 100 visitors per day and he has 50 visitors but he has 100 backlinks ?

do visitors' quantity help ranking as well..
