Hey guys,

Im very new to SEO, and I am trying to understand backlinks. Can someone clarify this for me, are backlinks used to gain more site traffic? And if so, how does one gain more?

Its when your website gets mentioned and linked from other websites for doing something or talked about, google or any search engine will see this and think your website is important and will show it higher on search results

The more reputation the website have that mentiones you the better
 
Also, guest post backlinks can actually get you traffic directly from the guest post. If the website you publish your guest post to is relevant to the niche and has good organic traffic, they might click your link. However, usually, these kinds of guest posts are pretty expensive.
 
Ah ok thanks, guys. Do either of you know how to get your site published on more backlinks?

YES: and more the view..so you have to do more backlinks as well..

And also learn the guide for newbie so that you will understand better.

When your website is listed and linked from other websites for doing something or talking about something, Google or any search engine will see this and consider your website to be relevant and will rank it higher in search results.Better higher the prestige of the page that mentions you, the better.
 
Backlinks are links from one website to another. Simply says, links from other website to our site. So, Google consider this links as ranking signal because other site gives trust, authority and noteworthy for our site. This high quality links increase our's site ranking position in search engine results.
 
you'll have to learn way more about them before buying/creating or touching anything backlinks related,
spend some time reading any related guides here in the forums or in some reliable SEO blogs
you'll have to invest in buying backlinks basically, but you need to get the right ones, which will require some knowledge and a lot of testing
 
You have a website about cars, and on your website you put an image of a Ford Escort and you make that image clickable, and when people click on the image you want those people to be taken to Ford's website. Of course, you can make people be taken anywhere you want (to a specific page on your website, to your collection of images, to another website, even to google's website if you want), not to Ford's website. I was just giving an example.

It doesn't matter where people go when they click on that image, that clickable image is a link back to something else (a page on your website, or a different website). Therefore it is a BACKlink because it links back to the destination that you specified.

Of course, you can link back to other pages/websites using anything, not just images. You can make text clickable, you can make your own website's logo clickable (actually, many websites do this, they make the logo on their website link back to the front page of their website), you can make an audio file link back to another page / website, etc. You get the idea. Any element (image, text, logo, audio file, video file, table, etc) on your website that can be clicked on and which takes people to the destination you specify is a backlink from one destination (the page where the clickable element is on) to another destination (the page or website that the clickable element takes people to).

Pretty easy to understand :)
 
They're more like votes for the algorithm to pick up your site and rank it higher over time.
 
Backlinks are links from a page on one website to another. If someone links to your site, then you have a backlink from them. If you link to another website, then they have a backlink from you.
 
Simplest definition: It is a link from one site to another.

Backlinks are very important in SEO because Search Engines use backlinks as a ranking factor. So, you should get backlinks from high DA - PA sites similar to your niche.

Simply saying
If I mention google.com here like this
That means Google.com now has backlink from blackhatworld.com

So, is buying backlinks the best or only way to get your site name out there? Im just trying to grow traffic to my site organically, Im an artist and just started my first online business and just need traffic like the rest of us!
 
buying backlinks is not the only way, but it's one of the best as it cuts the time it takes google to give you the delicious rankings considerably. You still have to wait some time to get ranked even if you buy good backlinks, but it's better than not buying any backlinks at all and waiting for google to pick your site up. I've done this last year and after 2,5 months of waiting when nothing happened to my site, I got mad and purchased backlinks. I still don't rank where I'd like to, but at least I moved the needle :)

As for traffic... especially since you're an artist and so I assume that you're having a site about art (in whatever form your art is), may I recommend sites like imgur, deviantart, pinterest, reddit or facebook? I think you might get decent traffic from these websites while waiting for the backlinks to do their job... if you know how to harness their power, that is...
