Backlinks to w.sampleexpireddomain.com - how to fix?

I have an expired domain with some backlinks pointing to w.sampleexpireddomain.com. I tried to create a subdomain "w", but I'm having difficulties but am able to create other subdomains like test.sampleexpiredomain.com. Is w.sampleexpireddomain.com somehow restricted? Any ideas as to how I can reclaim these backlinks?

Not sure why you can't create a subdomain with just "w.", but you do know that subdomains are counted as their own site? It won't help your main domain rank, as far as I know.

You could 301 the subdomain to the main site
