I have a local store, so I have a Google Places Page for business. Is it a good idea to blast some backlinks to that page? Would it help it ranking on local searches? Or would it get my site banned?

i have heard that it doesn't help...if you got some high authority sites to the page I am sure it won't hurt, but don't blast it with irrelevant links...

I think I will let it bake a little before I do anything. In the mean time I can get some backlinks to my yelp page and see if it does any good for me on google.

Don't backlink to your places page.

Thanks, but can you give me a little information on why not? I always learn something new around here.
