For my sites, links from smaller niche blogs worked better than big general websites. The topic match made a big difference.

Guest posts still give results in my experience, but the quality of the site matters a lot. I prefer fewer links from trusted websites.

I think guest posts are good for SEO when they are placed naturally on industry related websites. Low quality sites mostly waste time and budget.
