I have a competitor who recently hired an seo guy and his rankings shot through the roof.
He has a lot of inner pages and a lot of his inner pages are coming up for various terms.
I have already compared backlinks and that doesn't explain why he ranks better than me.
A lot of his inner pages that are coming up don't even have backlinks. are they being powered by his domain's overall authority? IDK.
what do you do in this situation, what else should I be looking at besides backlinks?

In niches with decent competition
What i have observed is

You will only need backlins to reach to top 5 positions or in the first serp page

After that i think it depends a lot on ctr manipulation, usability of the website, and like you said interal pages
and on page optimization

I totally agree with you.

Some people block spiders of SEO sites (like majestic, ahrefs) but not google or users.

This way PBNs pass all the link juice but can't be seen by competitors.

Thanks for answering. That's a clever strategy. Is there any way to get past that?

0 links? hmm.. why not google with link parameter and see what comes up - ie. link:inner-url

Have you checked his social signals count? Social engagement is becoming an increasingly powerful ranking Factor in itself...

You can check his metrics ( and your own as well good at matter) at shareyt.com/SocialCounter.pho

Disclaimer: I do not own that site, nor am I an affiliate of that site in any way and the social counter is free anyway

It could be about backlinks to the domain (homepage) and proper interlinking so inner pages get boost. Also, it's possible that the pages have hidden PBN links that don't show up on your SEO tools, but Google sees and loves them. Hidden links are backlinks that are blocked for SEO tools.

First of all previously before he hired an SEO guy. Was your ranking better than his?

No doubt Backlinks are impt (off page) but it could be that his On page was on point as well. Another factor could be indexing. By de-indexing irrelevant pages you could boost your overall authority.

Go to site: your domain and you can see what is being indexed. A good tip is that if you have any taxonomies, tags and all you can start by deindexing those using yoast.

Ok but moving on to your queries, it could be that the SEO guy blocked all crawlers from private crawlers like Ahrefs/majestic/semrush. In this case just use a non famous one, any backlink checker which you can find on google page 2- 3 - 4. Im sure there are many. From there you can easily source out their PBNs.

Cheers!

How long is his content? Google nowadays gives priority to sites that have quality content. It might be that his content are long like 2k words and have value in it.
