Advise some free metrics to check website's backlinks. Ahrefs is awesome but expensive

webmeup.com is cheaper, but they have no metrics, just link statistics.

Get some shared Majestic account if you do not have to check too much. If you do, just buy one. Quarterly payments are not that expensive.

Free backlink checker tool won't help you full metrics report, The premium tools only help you get exact metrics & reports

2. Open Site Explorer
3. SEMrush
4. Majestic

try and tell me your opinion. of course ahrefs is the best one but I think this one is good

I found Ahrefs to be very detailed and effective but need to be a SEO veteran vs newbie. Also a bit pricey. Currently looking for cheaper and simpler solution...

Better You can use MozBar and SeoQuake Extension:

MozBar- for Domain Authority and Page Authority.
SeoQuake- For Checking backlinks, Traffic rates etc.
