By creating a website based on long-tailed unpopular keywords with no competition, It would be easy to rank in googles top 10 (for the exact keyword phrase). Would backlinks from a website like this have any value?

Btw, I'm a new member at this forum. I'm looking forward yo learning from you guys:)

Yes and no.... It's been said that a link is a link is a link. Common thought is to get relevant links in your niche. However off niche links can be of value. Think of this: A guy who owns a Chevy may wish he had a BMW. Conversely a guy with a BMW may wish he a Chevy instead once he gets the repair bill.

While links like that may not raise your rankings they could provide some traffic. Traffic is weighed in the Google algo as well as number of links. I for one would take traffic over links any day.

I understand, but relevant or not, would the backlinks hold elevated value due to the websites good page-rank ?(even though it is only ranking well because of no or non existent competition).
Or is it the same as a low quality backlink?
