How valuable are backlinks from blogspots or other free domains? I mean are free sub-domains good to create some kind of a private blog network to improve my main website SERPs. Each domain would be supported by just a few well implemented backlinks on forums etc.

Is it even worth it?

Not at all. These are not "pbn" links, you've completely miscategorized them. These would count as Web 2.0s, and their valuable is quesitonable - especially if you are creating new web2.0 properties that have no backlinks pointing to them or other ranking values.

A real PBN involves buying an expired domain that already has many backlinks pointing to it and has been aged well with valuable content.

No PBNs and sub-domains are totally different from each other. If you post on free sub-domains or blogs sites they will be counted as Web 2.0 Submissions. In web 2.0 you will have to create a new sub-domain on various sites like Wordpress, Blogger etc and post on it. PBNs are the aged domains you will have to purchase and consider it your private blog network. These PBNs may have some value already so it depends on you if you purchase the PBNs with your relevant niche or may already have some backlinks attached with it. So it may help your website to rank.
