Backlinks for Authority Sites

When building an authority site, should one build links mostly to the homepage or to the inner pages? Will the inner pages rank by themselves without direct backlinks?

I'd like to know your experience.

Building backlinks to homepage are old fashioned and never works so well on these days unless you go with BH backlinks. If it's a legit whitehat authority, you should concentrate on getting backlinks only to the inner pages that are informative and/or describes about your product/service/blog content. The homepage will eventually gain authority through the internal links. And once the homepage gets enough authority, it'll pass the link juice to new inner pages as well which in turn will rank high on google without any backlinks. That's what I do with my sites and most of the new articles start getting organic traffic within a couple of days after publishing them.

Gotta diversify. No site has links just to the home page or just to internal pages, it's a mix.

I brand links to the homepage and focus on social networks for inner pages.

Diversity is the key here. Mix up the whole thing.

Don't just focus on a single page. You need to build backlinks to the homepage and as well as to inner pages to rank your pages.
If are pointing links to only homepage then, doing On Page SEO properly is useful which passes the link juice.

If you can't do that much for your website that is doing SEO for every single page that you want to rank on google you should just quit..
It is much necessary to build links for the inner pages also other than the home page.
A Simple trick include your website's every single inner page's url in your home page it will give some boost in the ranking along with the home page to your inner pages also.

Depends on your strategy -- but you seem to want little-risk for an authority site, which makes sense, so I'd probably recommend just going for high-quality links.

So instead of using spam to rank... just push for high-quality press links, guest posts, authority site links, etc.

It'll take more time but it's safer in the long-run.
