Backlinking to a domain only

Hey guys,

long time lurker first time poster. I haven't been able to find this info anywhere else so I wanted to see what people here thought of it. I have a domain name I just bought but no website yet. I want to start backlinking to the domain name in order to increase the rank of the domain name but I wanted to know if this is even possible or will I be hit by google for this?

I've never tried with just a domain name, but i've tried with a single landing page, and had no issue at all. Successfully getting many new domains up to a PR4. Bearing in mind, i was p;urely interested in raising PR, but not actually ranking.
