Backlinking before site is live

Has anybody tried building links to a domain and then registering the domain or perhaps more safely registering the domain but not putting a site on it and building links to it. Only after some time, put the site up.

What would be the effect of this? Similar to buying a dropped domain with links? Or it doesn't work?

Doesn't make much sense to do it. Maybe sending traffic to make it look something generic is ok.

lol, we've got some out of the box thinking here Especially the first approach with building links which will point crawlers to nonexistent domain and then suddenly after a few days the domain will be there could be interesting

Question of timing and with the wrong timing Google may think the links are just dead and will simply stop following. My guess is the originating page will get dinged by Google for bad links. Now what will actually happen is anybody's guess except for Googliath of course.

Well. It could be that you announced a site and people start talking about it. ( AKA backlinks)

Would be interesting to try.

tried this, not on the most competitive niche, but a gambling term. Blasted a site with a couple of thousand web 2 links when I bought the domain. Put a site on it a month later and it went straight to 1 - 3, stayed there for 6 months or so then dropped off to the top of page 2.

Its just like buying a expired domain.you will have some backlinks and PR.but they all are not useful because you are not getting any traffic from them

yeah I'm thinking the same.. it's like putting content on an expired domain with existing backlinks
