Backlinking at the right time - new website

I recently just set up a new site, have around 15 - 20 articles on it, have a facebook fan page to go with it. It's been only two days and there's already been a few likes here and there on different articles.

I've yet to start the link building process for this site, I left it for a couple of days so the content can get indexed, but I was wondering at this point when would it be a good idea to start the backlinking process, I plan to do this gradually and manually, so should I start now or wait maybe a couple of weeks? If so, can you tell me why?

You should be backlinking every week. Each week get slightly more aggressive with your link building.

Ok thanks, But is there any range that I should stick to during the first couple of weeks? How many would be fine for the first week to get the ball rolling?

That's a great question... I'm in a similar situation and will await an answer here. One thing I don't know is how do bad backlinks effect your site? I.e. buying a Fiverr gig for backlinks, I've heard that can hurt your rankings if they are not legit.

Yea, I've heard much the same, I've read quite a bit of information regarding backlinks and at times it seems to contradict itself. What I know is that it is a good idea to make sure that the content of the backlink is in relation to your website content. So apparantly it'll hurt your site if your content is, let's say, cosmetic skin care products and you are getting loads of backlinks from sports websites selling baseball bats, this somehow has a negative impact on your rankings.

Also, it is said to make sure the page rank of the backlink is fairly high, if the page rank of your backlink is fairly high then all the significance that comes with that link goes to your site in the eyes of the search engine. But it is also said you don't want to have EVERY backlink to have a high quality page rank because then it looks dodgy and like you're upto no good. So you have to mix it up a little, some low, some high and some average.

Another one would be that it wouldn't be a good idea to blast your site with loads of links at any given time, like a couple hundred links from a fiver gig would be bad because it looks "unnatural". But maybe if you do like 50 backlinks fiver gig here and there mixed with manual gradual backlinking yourself, then this would be good.

I suppose you just shouldn't make it obvious and mix it all up and be unpridictable i guess.

Fiverr is crap for links, and should only be used to point low quality links at Tier2-4 properties.

As for how many backlinks you should make, it's entirely up to you. You can make 10 per week, 100 per week, or a thousand per week. Google won't see every link instantly, so even if you make a thousand - only a handful will be seen at a time.

Thanks for the advice. What does that mean though, tier 2-4 properties? Sorry for the newb question... I just don't get a lot of the lingo around here yet.

There's still a lot I don't understand about backlinking, but a lot of the information seems quite contradicting, like everybody seems to have their own methods of doing things. I guess there really isn't any absolute objective way of backlinking for winning results, but rather it depends on a number of relative factors regarding that person's website and what they are aiming for. I'm personally just going to watch my site very carefully along side implementing certain strategies and monitor my results, and use the information to better understand how things work.
