Backlinking a site after a long time?

I have 2 websites that i have not backlinked or added new content for 1-2 years.

Both sites traffic improved after the Jan update so i think its time to show these some love.

The plan is to only get 4 backlinks max a month for each site.

Since they have been dormant does it sound like a good idea if i take the backlinking slowly and start of with say 2 per month to begin with?

Also would you agree that new content is even more important than backlinks at this stage?

Yes content is important in google ranking point of view.
But you can't ignore backlinks if you are looking to reach and maintain the top rankings. 4 links per month is not a bad idea at all. Make sure you will get links from niche relevant domains.

Content is important so are backlinks I would suggest you to go for ORM and Pbns as that’ll massively boost your site up

If you have not updated the sites for 2 years with new content, it will be very hard to revive the websites now.

Think about it like this;

Why would you suddenly get backlinks to that site naturally?

A bunch of people just found your outdated site and decided to start linking to it? (that’s kinda suspicious)

OR you publish some new content, let it settle in for a couple of weeks with your new found rankings.

Then people discover it and start to link to it (wink wink, nudge nudge)

Know what I’m saying?

Backlinks are links that are directed towards your website. Backlinks are important for SEO because some search engines, especially Google, will give more credit to websites that have a good number of quality backlinks, and consider those websites more relevant than others in their results pages for a search query.

That does sound much better than my own plan. I will do this thanks.

Well yeah, a few links to the new content, followed by a few links to the main pages (after whoever is linking discovered the great content the whole site has to offer).

Be wary of your UX signals though!

Stick to niche relevant links and keep the count small in beginning.

User Experience: Bounce rate, click through’s, time spent on page.

In other words, keep the stuff you’re building links to super relevant and informative. Put yourself in the users shoes. Are they getting value from the new content or are they clicking the back button?

This is a super white hat approach btw. Maybe some Blackhat guys can weigh in and school me!

WRONG.
It depends on your strategy. Add contents only after abandoned the blog. It is not enough.
I had a website that never added content on it for more than 4 years. After some time, I try to "rebuild" again by adding content and edit some old posts with up to date information. In 3 months, I am posting new content every day and then do backlinks. The result...boost..all targeted keyword stay on top on G again.

Just go nice and steady on links, quality over quantity. If you understand link velocity, you'll understand why.

First start with unique and quality content and add relevant links, analyze your site performance and gradually increase it. Diversify your link profile.
