You mean the anchor text or the hyperlink?

the hyperlink, so anchor is gardening and then that links to the url

As far as I know the hyperlink must contain either http:// or https:// , so you can't use just www.site.com for hyperlink. Other than that it's a good practice to use both www and non-www versions, but make sure you have more of the ones your actual url is, for instance if your valid url is http://www.site.com/ then you should have the vast majority of your links pointing to http://www.site.com/, and not http://site.com/. Hope that makes sense.

and you need to 301 the version you are not using to the other one so the link juice passes.

It's important to redirect the links to the one you are using.

If you are using WP you don't need to do anything cos it's automatic.
