You should always prefer homepage for this, as it will help you increase your DA, which will eventually help you rank your articles later. So always aim for home page first rather than individual articles.

Hi, I suggest you to focus on home page with quality backlinks through gu. You should focus on building quality links, search results are based on more than 200 ranking singals.. it will also helps you to improve domain authority. If you are promoting home page, it will automatically create your brand name visibility.

Building backlinks for your homepage will help you increase your domain authority. Try to build backlinks for your home page but focus on other pages and articles and avoid spam backlinks while building backlinks.

If you're look to rank a range of terms and pages, I'd give onus to the homepage. One particular term/page? I'd be inclined to go 50/50 split with homepage and target page.
Link juice your homepage maximum you can to set an authority in search engine's eye but your pages are going to rank not the homepage for all keywords. So, develop as many backlinks you can for each pagesyou want to rank for. More the backlinks for pages sooner they rank in SERP.

If you're in a beginning stage, build most of the links to the homepage. Do not overkill it. Then give some time and build backlinks to the inner pages if you have enough links for the Homepage. Place 2-3 innerlinks in the articles which will be a good option too.
