Okay so I'm currently doing a Whitehat (so far, no links built) site and i'm getting traffic purely from content. However, I want to start slowly building high PR backlinks to it, should I be building these backlinks to my product reviews or homepage?

And if I build them to my homepage, will that also help my product reviews (who are SEO optimised for different keywords) rank on Google or would I have to build high PR backlinks to my product reviews separately?

It depends on your on-page structure. If your inner pages link back to your homepage, this will boost your homepage when backlinking to your inner pages and vice versa. Though, I think the homepage should be the first place where you should build links to.

Backlinks to your main page 'yoursite.com' are best but I wouldn't worry too much about the type of link. Instead think about the page ranking of the sites you're targeting for a backlink. If these sites don't look good to google then your backlink on them isn't going to look good to google either. Make sure the sites you're targeting have good PR!

well 1st i create some backlinks to my home page then i moved to inner pages , but thats just the way i do it dont know abt others

How would you create backlink to your home page? Like link your main page in the article or something?

Try and picture how a site would naturally link (bearing in mind your trying to be as white hat as possible) people stumble across content and think that's good I'll share that page (so a link pops up to the article) after a good circulation a percentage of those who linked your content might then say that they will share your site homepage.

So naturally speaking the article should have more links than the homepage. Probably by as much as 60%. As more articles are added and more shares made. The homepage links will increase, as 30% share both the article and the homepage. Eventually the homepage will have more links than any one article.

As a rule of thumb I tend to aim for 30% of the total site links point to the home page.

Okay, so link my homepage through my articles and build high PR links to my articles? And from there the links will pass link juice through those links to my homepage?

You should be building links to your homepage and your product pages - as said above, keep it as natural as possible.

-In fact, if you are getting traffic naturally anyway, you could build your link profile based on the way traffic is spread across your site - ie if you get 5% of your traffic direct to your homepage, build 5% of your links to your homepage, and the rest to product pages.

You can link to your homepage through your articles if you want.

I was talking about a separate campaign aimed at your homepage, to the value of roughly 30% of the links to your article.

If you do that each time you run a campaign to a new article the homepage will increase in authority.

People don't naturally link to your homepage, unless they think your site is the nuts, so you will have more per campaign to the article, than the homepage.

However as your articles build you will eventually have more links to your homepage than any one article, but still only around 30% of the total site links.

Now silo structure is a different kettle of fish, and will dictate, what you link to from your money articles, hence why I'm not sure I would make a point of linking from your money article to your homepage.

Oh right!!! Okay, so build links to both my articles and homepage, but what about if i've got like 30 articles? haha. And since it's going to be a proper project I should keep them high PR? Keep some social signals going?

Oh so what you're saying is when i'm building links, 30% to homepage and 70% to my articles.
I'm not entirely sure what a silo structure is? And "money articles"? I'm trying to rank ALL my articles though? I mean, preferably haha... and keeping my adsense on all posts/pages? Is that wrong?

No what your saying sounds fine,

Silo structure is a massive subject but basically you are trying to isolate the flow of juice to related topics, so, a site about cars, would have bmw pages interlinked but isolated from Ford. Likewise all Ford pages will be interlinked, but isolated from skoda for instance.

There is loads about it on the forum.

Money article is just the article on your site designed to make money, and that could be all of them if that's how you work it.

Okay so what i'll do is slowly build some web 2.0's that link to my articles and then have a small link to my homepage somewhere, most likely below the article, something along the lines of "If you want to learn more about (Niche/Link to home) you've come to the right place!"

I am almost sure that's what my current site is... so i've got an article on just say.. Printers, then i've got an Article on the Epson 540e (example), I would link the word Epson 540e in the Printer article to the article specifically on the Epson 540e, if that makes sense.

One more thing, do the ads on my pages change CPC when they click on a different article or does it always stay the same?

At the end of the day SEO is all about natural looking growth.

You need to ask yourself:

"If this wasn't my website, and I was trying to share the content what would I link to?"

Chances are you'd link to the internal content with either a helpful hyperlink, or a "click here". There may be an occasional link to the homepage but that's likely less than 1% of cases in a content driven site.

Focus on internal linking for your high PR properties and blend your hyperlink text for a real win.

That sounds fine mate,

The CPC should change with each article as some keywords will carry more value in adwords as such bring more value to your adsense adblock.

Even if i've just put the adsense code into my sidebar? It'll automatically do that?

Yea the algorithm for adsense will tune into the content on a clean browser,
So all things being equal your CPC will change per article.

Each visitor will be different though if they don't regularly clean their cookies etc google delivers personalised adsense results as well as remarketing, so you will never truly know until your account is updated what you got for each article at any given time.

Ah brilliant! That solves a huge dilemma I was having... I wasn't sure if I had done it correctly.

One more thing, CPC? I only got 20 cents for a click, but the CPC of the keyword was like $2.50?

Yea that can be normal, google takes a cut, plus they also take the highest bidders for their search results so the CPC that you are seeing currently is probably a lower bidder.

All things being equal the higher in the serps you get the closer to the CPC you should get, though google always keeps the highest CPC for their own pages, thus creaming the profits themselves.

20 cents is not a terrible return as you will see it start to multiply as your traffic increases. I've had expectations in the dollars per click in the past only to realise 2 cents per click, now that's a bummer lol.

Haha, yeah that's what i'm afraid of... just say I do see 2 cents per click, is there much you can do to change that?

Ha ha, well that's up to the G man, though increasing your serps should help.

But it's a numbers game just keep going for high paying keywords get them ranked and get the numbers adding up.
