Backlinks are links that link to your site.
Does posting a picture from your site, to a forum thread count as a backlink?

Like say if you link to yousite.com/uploads/randompic.jpg

Does that count as a backlink?

Yes, It is counted as a backlink. Make sure you fill the "alt" attirbute which would be considered as anchor text.

yep, it counts as a backlink... if you link to any kind of site/page/image/video and etc.. from your site that is a backlink to there..

As others have already stated, image links to your domain sure do count as backlinks.
In fact on most of my earlier sites, well placed images on high traffic sites were pretty much my main method of getting backlinks when they were lacking in content
