backlink question

hey people, i realise there are alot of smart people here im just curious how you people get your backlinks. im only newish to this internet industry making about $20-$40 a day. i hear people claim that they have 1000's of backlinks is this true? if so how do you get the so many? please could you share your methods.
i really appreciate any replies.
