Backlink Quality vs. Quantity

When it comes to SEO, I always seem to get confused with this issue. After reading much about white hat methods, all I hear is that manual link building is the way to go because 2-3 quality link sources could be worth hundreds of non-targeted, non-relevant links.

However I've spoken to many SEO folks who say that they have seen great results from commenting on blogs, article submissions, etc. All of which are relatively easy link sources. Now I'm aware that the ranking difficulty will depend on the competition, but would it be safe to say that you can outrank legitimate sites by bombarding a MFA or similar affiliate site with links?

When it comes to handling clients, I want to be transparent with where their links are coming from, however I want to keep my options open to take advantage of link opportunities even if it is considered black hat. I suppose the 301 redirect method or a tiered linking system could work but how beneficial are these methods if the linking pages aren't relevant to the content?

Listen, I see the top of serps money keywords dominated by sites with links from content that have ABSOLUTELY NO RELEVANCE (except the anchor text in the link).

That being said, relevant moderated links or links from relevant content you create yourself lasts longer and are not subject to degradation from other link builders.
 
A mix of both quality and quantity is the best to go (diversity). Get some links from high authority websites / article directories along with blog commenting and profile backlinks.

Every single backlinks counts!
 
The number one thing to remember in all of your backlink building is that the links MUST be "follow". A thousand links that are not are just a thousand worthless links (and wasted time on your part!).
 
Quality is always better than quantity. If you send 10,000 non-targeted visitors, you might end up doing 5 sales, but if you send 1000 targeted, might get 50 sales!

kharm, I think math182 is just giving an a general example of how quality fairs better over quantity.

OP: You mentioned about outranking legitimate sites...in order to do that you have to study their backlink structure and copy it as much as you can...that is one way which has been mentioned here. Also exploit any other weakness your competition has and exploit it. In short, it all depends on the competition you are trying to outrank.
 
It may be true that a link from an unrelated source or content can somehow boost you up, but I would feel much better having a related article containing a link. For one, the reader gets value and warms him/her up to wanting to actually click on your link. Two, if in doubt as to whether my link will 'count' as relevant in the eyes of google, I would go for related topic anyday. Three, the alternative is just spam.
 
yes, everything in here right..But I will agree with Scipteen, we can mix both of them. Quality and quantity
 
Many different links, from different sources, with different anchor text, different Domains and ips.
 
Start with quality and then move to quantity. You don't want your brand new site to just have a bunch of garbage links, that could cause a sandbox or at worst, a ban.
 
simple answer:money site+quality links=good ,money site+quantity links=so so(bad) might get sandboxed if you have too many of them web 2.0 site+quantity links(blog comments,profile links etc..)=good
 
Well as sad as I am to admit it I work with the adult sites. Even tho I own 130 domains of all sorts of different nature. I find Adult sites you maybe have to spam a little bit outside your realm but it works. I have scrape boxed and SEMI-SPammed Divorce sites and relationship counsel sites and have had great results. Im now trying to get out of the adult site business and move to something more soul catching and have found quality links work best for honest sites and semi-spamming quantity works on the negative sits Drugs, sex, rock and roll :)


with this being said I have never spammed nor tried to. I dont encourage it. Nor do any of the legit users and or members of this forum. :)
 
1.you certainly can rank with links from non-relevant pages.there is absolutely no doubt about that,
2.but never should anyone underestimate the power of either links from trusted sites or links from the neighborhood[the same niche relevant pages or web sites].
 
you need both quantity and quality, is that simple

I think the answers provided here already tell a telling tale of various methods you can use to compete and beat out your competitor. However, before you embark down this road you will first need to assess your competition properly in order to determine the best approach.

Otherwise known as a 'plan'.....if your competitor is utlising BH techniques then to overcome that you will probably have to do the same, but better. You could beat him or her out using less but better quality links or indeed simply copy what they have done and ensure you go much further. Whichever direction you choose, you firstly need to assess and understand the task ahead of you - then you can look to learn and impliment many techniques to beat out the competition.
 
alittle bit of both is good, but whats important to get high ranking is not only backlinks, visits is also important to rank high
