When this happens it is a fake backlink and often in javascript. I paid some guy to give me some, on 5r, and he thinks it is a good link as it is visible in html webview but not anywhere in the source code. Who is right? I was taught if you can't find it in the source, it is no value and the spiders will not find it.

Do you have lots of backlinks or only a few? You can always ping the website, and then check yahoo site explorer or google search your domain to see if they indexed it. I am not sure what you mean by "visible in html webview", so I couldn't say for certain.

If you can click/hover over the link while browsing, and it shows your website as the destination, and there is no "no-follow" meta tags, it should index and add value.

Kickflip didn't understand what you meant.

Of course it doesn't count, if the link is not visible in the quellcode. It's a hidden link, like iframing a site, where the link is on the iframe, not on the actual website.

This guy that you talked with has no idea, and is a wannabe.

Is the guy claiming it has some big authority/High page rank? Then it would be easier to understand what is going on. To me, a backlink is easy to make, I don't understand why people would take the time to make "fake backlinks."
