Backlink from a competitor - Advantage or disadvantage?

Recently I noticed that a competitor of mine put in a blog post on him a backlink to my site. In the same post he has other internal links to other pages of his site. Can it disadvantage me or benefit me? Your page authority is 26.

As long as they aren't spam backlinks, they can only do well.

Almost always is an advantage unless it has done some type of link stuffing which may affect self more than yours.

The thing here is that many "competitors" believe in the idea that sharing value may end in reciprocate actions and also may end ranking for multiple result-oriented keywords.

For example: "restaurant in San diego". You create a list of "best restaurants in san diego", even linking to their sites, from your site, which is one among many, restaurants in san diego. If he ranks for that, and people enter his site, which is, in fact a restaurant in san diego, the chances being interested on it are bigger, than just appearing on Google Maps or any other citation site.

Not a bad strategy sometimes, but I'm not sure about your personal scenario, just commenting on possible reasons, and how may affect you.

It’s your lucky day. That’s a great backlink, even if it was no follow. Getting a backlink from your competition can be really hard depending on the niche.

It might be short lived, though. As someone has already pointed out, some people will do this expecting you to return the favor.

How did you knew that is was build by a competitor? It could also be a genuine organic backlink
