backlink diversity in 2013?

I originally posted this in the white hat forum, but maybe I'll get more of a response in this forum.

Hey everyone.

I was wanting to know something about your backlink portfolios. So it's generally the rule to have 10-20% of the backlinks as your primary keyword, but is the percentage for links directed to a specific page, or to an entire domain as a whole (including homepage, article pages, contact page etc.)? I'm wanting to change a few backlink anchor text (that are currently pointing to my home page) to some better long tail keywords that I've found, and point them to new pages on my website. Do you think this would hurt my rankings for my main keyword?

Normally you don't try to rank every page in your domain for the same keyword, so the rule you're referring to generally applies to the page you're attempting to rank.

I'm wanting to change a few backlink anchor text (that are currently pointing to my home page) to some better long tail keywords that I've found, and point them to new pages on my website. Do you think this would hurt my rankings for my main keyword?

Do I think removing anchor text links from page A to page B will negatively affect the ranking of page A? Yes, I think it will.

Thanks for the advice. I will get building more backlinks then, instead of changing the existing ones. Anyone else want to chime in?

I'd say there's no certain percentage as such; there's no certain perfect type of links as such; there's no perfect path - whitehat/blackhat/mixed as such. It's all a mystery and we gotta find what works for us/our website mate. Trust me I've done it all; I've test driven over 20 packages on the same domain, with different presets, I've maintained sites only with blackhat - heck I've ranked some only with direct xrumer blasts without any diversity (one still ranking! nothing other than Xrumer!) (it's relatively easy for me to experiment as I'm an SEO provider having amass of resources at command, and that's something I do before a new launch, but that's all a different story perhaps for another thread). The point I'm trying to make here my friend is that, again, figure out what's working for your unique case. I'm not a big fan of changing existing backlinks to create a sudden void (tho being able to have control over your backlinks - the fact that you can change them is certainly not a bad thing!); instead I'd balance out the portfolio.

Keep your main keywords under 5%.. I keep them under 3%..

Build links to your URL, Brand name (around 40-70%). Most people would ignore this part and would start building links on generic terms and other long terms.

I keep my main kw at max. of 20%, 20% raw url and rest generic.

long tail keywords to the same page wont hurt.

I usually have 80% of the links to the actual p[age, 20% to the home page.

If you have other pages for your long tail terms, interlink the pages. This really helps how google sees you.

if you can, never remove a link to your site, only build more. Links being removed has a bad effect on sites.

I honestly did not know that only 20% should be your keyword... I usually have 80% the keyword, or some thing like, if my keyword was "Campfire ghost stories" i use "ghost stories", "ghost", "stories", "campfire" etc. then 10% the url, then 10% something like "here"
