However I agree with the Yahoo explorer.

Yahoo site explorer.
It works fine.
But I am not pretty sure about whether it shows the exact number of backlinks

some ppl prefer to close indexation from yahoo by setting permission to disallow yahoo bot to index a site in robots.txt file

so, be prepared for this and check robots first

That is a very limited thing to do. Yahoo can bring lots of traffic. Msn also. You just gotta target the right keywords.

my favorite is jon legers web companalyst because it checks backlinks by their anchor text so I can see how difficult it will be to rank for a particular account.

I actually paid for it but I think it might be here on BHW

this is a pretty cool tool, need to download though. Havent used it in a while but as far as I remember it does anchor text, linking page title and PR as well.

For my own websites, Google webmaster tools. For external sites Yahoo site explorer is good - also recommend hxxp://www(dot)linkdiagnosis(dot)com/
