I like Ahrefs a lot, they have the best backlink database but their pricing/credits model is a bit out of control. A good alternative is SemRush, you can use a trial to see if it works for you. Also, Ahrefs is free if you want to look at links for a site that you own, they have a couple ways to verify domain ownership and then you can monitor your site for free.

Moz and Semrush. Ahrefs is too expensive these days.
Something much much cheaper? Ubersuggest, but the problem is you'll get the least amount of data.

This space hasn't changed much in years IMO. AHREFS, SEMRush, etc.

Ahrefs and SEMrush are still good for backlink checking. Moz and Majestic are also good options, each with unique features. Lately I've been experimenting with LinkMiner.
