Actually it takes more time until Google will show you the backlinks. Anyway big G will count the links just it won't show this to us. For example I see in yahoo 1000+ backlinks and in Google only 500+. This doesn't mean that Google is not counting all the BL and I know I have more than 1000 for sure. So keep building backlinks and in matter of weeks you should see the results. Have you tryied to type in Yahoo site explorer "linkdomain:http://yoursite.com" ?

Both google and yahoo are terribly unreliable at displaying backlinks... some of my sites show 300 backlinks in google while yahoo shows 100... in some cases it shows double the links in yahoo than google...
I don't even pay attention to those numbers, just slowly build links and what SERP increase.

my experience is to take the number of backlinks google shows and mutiple it by 2.5 and that usually gives me a pretty accurate estimate of how many real backlinks i have because although google has already seen most of my backlinks they dont tell us that in real time

I would like to add that checking backlinks is pointless. When your site has thousands of links doesn't mean it will rank high in SERP. The only thing you have to check is your actual position in SERP.
