I don't think you're going to find any good free backlinks, maybe if you surf the web and try to leave comments on relevant blogs. Overall costs for SEO have been increasing during the years, especially for link building as it needs much more quality and care than before. Even if you're going to find expired domains to create your own "free" PBN, you're gonna have to pay recurring fees for the domains and hosting, also create or buy a website for the domains. This is far from free, either. So hard to understand what you're referring to here.

free backlinks can destroy your website badly because all those free backlinks will be created on low quality websites which will have low pa and da so it will always called spammy backlinks, Aways make backlinks on high authority websites so you can get quality backlinks.

Actually, if you go for web 2.0 expired subdomains you can make your own free PBN. It will take you forever to find expired Tumblrs for example if you don't have Scrapebox or something else, but it is still free. Some other ways of getting free backlinks I can think of are:
- Find do-follow blogs and forums in your niche, just post there. You can do this with free Chrome (or other browsers) extensions.
- Guest blogging on relevant websites. If you find blogs with "write for us", "guest post", etc. it's free and is probably the best backlink source you can get at this 'price'.
- Skyscraper link building, I don't think I can post links so just Google it or go to backlinko.com since is Brian Dean's method I believe. Actually, everything that involves outreach should work well. You still need some tool to get your competitor's backlinks. Ahrefs is by far the best, I don't think there's any free tool that gets close to it.
PS: Isn't this the whitehat SEO forum? Why are we talking about PBN? Is that considered whitehat? I'm a long time BHW stalker but I haven't been here in a while, so I'm curious.
