back linking to inner pages - penguin proof?

Assuming Google does indeed rank web pages, not websites, wouldn't it make more sense to ONLY do back linking to inner pages, targeting specific keywords? That way if you do happen to get penalized, atleast you can just make a new page instead of buying a new domain and just starting over?

any thoughts on this?

it is easier to rank main domain with keyword in description than an inner page but it is a good idea and I think lots of people dew this (I dew) this way you can slowly build up an "authority" site and rank for lots of keywords, if it is penguin proof or not will depend on onpage SEO and your backlinking methods, dont rank all your keywords with the same backlinking profile change and randomize it this way you have more of a chance of staying safe of future updates

F***ing great idea, considering most people probably do actually most backlink work for their main page. This idea is a win/win no matter which way you look at it. Thanks.
 
We currently build links 80% to internal pages and 20% to main page and have had a lot of success post-penguin - I wouldn't go so far as to say its penguin-proof but it has worked ever since Penguin hit in our case.
 
do backlinking to home page and inner pages too.After penguin it is recommend to do natural back linking to look natural in eyes of google or else you get penalized.
 
I guess the question i have is as follows: if Google penalizes an inner page, does it get transferred to the home page?
 
Of course, even before Penguin, it was advisable to have a decent number of backlinks to your inner pages. After Penguin, even more so. For many of my niche sites, I have inner pages ranking for different terms and with WP, even if something needs changing,​I can always use a plugin to 301 an inner page to another one. :-)
 
Linking to inner pages was always a safe practice in my book, even before penguin.

Interestingly, if you ever get into local seo consulting, local businesses NEVER link to inner pages. They always link to the domain root and nothing more.
 
I noticed my personal business does rank for inner pages for certain keywords sort of like how an mms can still rank.

my sites inner page is ranking #2 from last 4 moth, for my main keyword. and home page is on #14..
i guess don't do much backlinking of your inner page, just head some quality links to them..
 
I think this is SEO 101. You should always be backlinking your inner pages.
 
Anyone tried this on a site already affected by penguin?

Your right about backlinking the inner pages but I have had sites that have had penalties site wide. This is more complex than that. I wish it was that simple. But if you diversify your backlinks to inner pages and your main domain SLOWLY with many different anchor texts you have the best bet of surviving the updates.

Is it ok to blast inner pages with scrapebox with a variety of anchors?
