Aweber or MailChimp?

HA!!! FORGET THE BUDGET....

Once you get up and running the prices for MC & aW are the same,
well actually MC is $1 MORE per month and there are some little bells
and whistles that are included in aW that are nice.
However, MC has a GRAPHICS package that is SUPER!!!
I have been with aW for 3+ years, but I'm canning them.
IF YOU HAVE ANY LISTS THAT SHOULDN'T REQUIRE DOUBLE
OPT-IN THEN MAILCHIMP DOESN'T REQUIRE YOU TO DO IT!
This 'my friends' is a BIG plus... AND for all of you BHW ppl
who suffer from multiple identity crisis... it looks like you can
have as many 'free' accounts of up to 500 contacts and up
to 3000 email sends PER MONTH PER ACCOUNT.
So if you are segmenting your market, maybe free accounts
would make sense (one for each market).
I'm a programmer and use of the APIs to synchronize accounts
is super (having reviewed the list of api functions available)
The videos covering MC keep your attention while taking you
through the whole system... so move over aWeber!!! Later

I've signed up for MailChimp to check it out seen as it's free but the problem I had is I couldn't work out how to set up a broadcast like you do in aweber.
What I want is for someone to subscribe, then there sent the double opt-in email, then the thank you email, then I wanted to automatically send 5 pre-made emails one per week.
With Aweber I know you just set up your list then set up a broadcast and all the above would work but I couldn't work out how to do this with MailChimp.
I saw the Autorespond feature in MailChimp but I couldn't for the life of me see how to configure the double opt-in email or thank you email.
Any advice would be great because If i'm honest the backend of MailChimp does appear to be so much more powerful and feature rich once you've got it all working.

I use mailchimp as a major part of my day job and I really like it. I have also used aweber in the past as well. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.
If you are pretty much a "legit" email marketer selling "real" product (ie it's an offline business type thing or you are trying to create an online brand) I would probably recommend Mailchimp - particularly if you are sending out regular emails on a schedule (ie once a week, once a month etc) to your whole or segmented list who have signed up for it. It also integrates with Google Analytics, Twitter, Facebook, heaps of other software, have a great API to code data links to other programs if you are that way inclinded and much more. On important thing worth noting is they are very tough on spam, so if you are sending to purchased or scraped lists that people haven't genuinely agreed, and you are likely to get a lot of spam complaints, then steer clear - you will be banned anyway. BUT because they are so strict, if you are legit you have a much higher chance of making it to the mailbox instead of the spambox with mailchimp.
Aweber is awesome software, and is MUCH better for autoresponders etc than mailchimp. So if rather than sending out to your entire list you do a lot of "email on signup, one week after signup, haven't heard from you for a while etc" type ones that are on a set schedule related to the client rather than a newsletter of specials etc Aweber is better. Mailchimp has great segmenting tools, but this is more say if people sign up for different topics and you email everyone interested in that topic with an email at the same time. Hope this makes sense.
Aweber is also a bit less picky than mailchimp regarding who it accepts and lets continue on it's system, hence why it's the prefered option for so called "internet marketers", affiliate marketers, so called "seo guru's" and other types of "guru's" etc. This means if you do the wrong thing you are much less likely to be banned, but there is the potential for lower deliverability - although usually still pretty good. There is also a bit of a stigma with Aweber, in the sense a lot of the emails sent through it from IMers are plain text showing this domain in the link, and i've had coversations with several people who think aweber is some thought of spam/scam network. Not saying it is at all, but you risk some having that impression if people see them in your links.

MailChimp ALSO has phone support and not only can you do what you are
talking about "Broadcasts based on when a person signs up", but also you
can do "Broadcasts based on a certain date for messages to go out".
The free account does have a limit of emails per month, but I find this limit
to be realistic. Contacting people every day gets old! (to them)
I don't know anybody that is able to provide that much value (everyday)
for me to be interested in not unsubscribing.
Contact support and get some help... if you can figure out Aw you can
figure out Mc
Definitely - especially if you are doing high volume emailing. It's fast, efficient and the deliverability is excellent. We send 300,000 emails a day to one list, and it only costs a few hundred bucks a month. Ridiculously cheap for the money we make with it.
