What is the most amount of people I should safely follow a day to avoid the banhammer?

When I create a new user, I follow up to 1,000 max per day.

What is banhammer??
Its a hammer with a bun.

400? 1000?

i heard of ppl getting banned at 500 a day.

anyone else's opinions?

I am intersted to know that too?
and wanna know also does twitter can make a ban IP ? or just a ban for the continent or the account ?

ban a whole continent lol thats a bit severe - I''m building about 1000 to 1800 new a day but spread it out - i have 15 accounts - the trick is to set up your profile, picture, few tweets every day (automated) and get a real e-mail address

I add 1000 a day every day with no problems. Even before the limits were introduced i was deleting at least 5000 ppl who were unfollowing and added 5000 new ppl back on within 24hours no problem, i was doing this pretty much everyday on one account alone.
In my experience you will only get banned if you are spamming something, this may mean by posting referral links/links to spammy site trying to get people to pay for things. Or just posting crap which the twitter staff will know is spam.

twitter tos

500 a day till you get 2000 following you
then unfollow
then follow 10% of the amount of the people following you

I hope I helped a bit

cheers

the reason why people get banned is because people have around

following: 1500
followers: 100
tweets: 0

that is why you get banned.

Post a decent pic to the profile. Use Prettytweet.com to upload a decent background. Use twitterfeed.com for automated posting and don't add a shitload of followers until you have 50 updates (takes 2 days w/twitterfeed).
Use proxy's. no more than 5 accts. per proxy.

At least that is what is working for me right now...

I believe Twitter has proclaimed that 500 was their hit, but I suggest not making a huge transition from 1 to 500. Steadily build up like how authority links build up gradually.

Truth is if you don't just spam you won't get banned. Interact with your followers, and you'll make more money anyway.

Following 1,000 per day is no big deal. Key points (many mentioned before) are:

1) Custom Twitter Background
2) Photo
3) Bio
4) Follow only about 10 -20 upfront. Just enough to get a few followers.
5) Put out 30-50 Tweets before beginning to "grow" accounts.
6) Continue to post a good mix of tweets (status updates, retweets, links, interaction with other users...etc) as you are following.
7) Try to avoid refollowing

I've followed a thousand a day, but I do actually interact and every tweet doesn't contain a link. And answer your replies.

This thread has helped me sort things out-- thanks.

Also, would using proxys for multiple accounts help?

you can follow as many as you can
twitter do not ban people for following reason.

From my experience you dont get banned from following a whole bunch of people (this will happen some day, but not yet). You get banned from numerous people blocking you. So, to not get banned, dont annoy your followers. I annoyed my followers whilst testing xbird when it came out on my twitter profile with just over 2k followers, of course with a tweet ever 15 seconds i pissed off a lot of people. Leading to heaps of blocks, leading to suspension. My twitter spamming accounts can last for weeks with 500-1000 spam updates easily. Using 4 bots for 8 hours straight on 10 accounts got me banned though.

Just follow as many as you want, getting to 2k is easy.

based on my experiment im following 1k everyday then tweet 1 or 3 a day then on the following day unfollow all of them then follow 1k again.. still no ban hammer.
