What are the biggest mistakes beginners make in link building?

Many newcomers jump straight into tactics like mass directory submissions, irrelevant guest posts, or buying cheap links without considering long-term SEO impact. From your experience, what are the most common errors beginners fall into, and how can they avoid these pitfalls to build a sustainable link profile?

I monitor our stats pretty closely, and I can say the biggest success we’ve had is going to several forums and just participating correctly with real responses. Obviously, if your signature and website are in the link, all the better. Posting genuine input and putting in the time pays off. I actually bought a dictation tool so I can communicate better, since typing so much became very challenging on the hands.

When I was a beginner in SEO ( I am a beginner now, but a bit better than before). I only think about the site AS (from Semrush) and DR (From Ahrefs), and whether the links ******** when I buy guest posts. Some time later, I saw some backlinks in the user profile page or note page, and some pages were not even indexed. It was wasting money!

Definitely, as a newbie when you lack the required knowledge what else can we expect in the beginning.

We learn with trial and error to gain experience and expertise.

Some do go for cheap links just to increase the number of backlinks. It can hurt rankings instead of improving it.

I recommend avoiding PBNs and other risky tactics. For beginners, it’s better to stick with safer methods like relevant guest posts, niche edits, and building natural links.
