I know the topic is basic and surely already discussed but couldn't find the answer to my exact question...so here I am.
Let's say I'm selling shoes (I'm going with a generic example, but my business is actually a bit more specific) and I find myself targeting both my homepage and my products page (which is a collections page showing all my shoes, but I'm not selling them online) for the same, main keyword.
Initially I simply didn't care that much and found out Google tended to simply rank before my home (in any case, both are not in top10 yet), but while studying the serp I realized that all the top ranking results are actually showing collections/products page...and it totally makes sense to me as probably people who are googling these "main" kws want to buy or see examples of shoes, not a generic brand homepage.
So now I decided I would like to make some effort to optimize my collections page for the main kw and being sure my home doesn't fight with it. My question is...what would you do? I'm sure home vs products or category page is a very common situation.
My ideas are/were:
- Ignore the issue and keep the two pages on the same kw (I think it's not the best idea)
- Optimize my collections page and trying to find some kind of synonym kw for my home (won't it still cannibalize somehow?)
- Optimize my collections page and just optimize my homepage for my brand name
What are your suggestions? Anything among these or even totally different?
Thank you very much for your help!
