had a weird one this week with a client running google ads for a local hvac company. set up an automated bid rule to lower cpa target by 15% if cost per conversion went above $85 for 3 consecutive days. seemed smart right, conservative even. well the rule triggered friday night during a cold snap when everyone in the city was searching for emergency heat repair. conversions were slower not because the ads sucked but because the office was closed and leads were sitting in a form queue. rule didn't know that. dropped bids, lost saturday morning traffic completely, client missed probably $4-6k in booked jobs.

manually i would have caught that in 5 minutes. checked the account saturday around noon, saw the tanked impression share and put two and two together. had to manually override and jack bids back up but the morning rush was already gone. the rule was technically doing exactly what i told it to do which is the frustrating part. no malice just zero context awareness.

now i'm thinking these automated rules need serious exclusion windows around weekends and holidays at minimum. maybe i'm overcomplicating setups that should stay manual for seasonal service businesses. anyone else run into automation making a technically correct but completely wrong call like this?

That’s a classic case of automation lacking real-world context. Rules can work well, but adding time-based exclusions or manual oversight for peak periods (like weekends or seasonal spikes) is crucial—especially for local service businesses.

had this happen with a google ads target cpa rule on a b2b saas trial campaign, conversions had a 5-7 day lag and the rule read low volume as poor performance, it slashed bids on my best ad groups within 48 hours and cpa shot up 60% before i caught it. automation treating delayed conversions like zero conversions is a completely different problem than what it looks like on the surface
